Classroom behavior management

I love being a middle school teacher. Not something I thought I would ever say! I am by no means an expert in classroom management, but I know kids can't learn and I can't teach, if we don't have structure. Especially with middle school, they can be tough...
This year has been especially challenging. You see, I have this class, (we all have had this class or been in it) it's a very interesting dynamic. There are 17 boys and 6 girls. The gentlemen in the class are what they call "frequent flyers". Meaning they are frequently flying into the principals and deans office. They have reading right after lunch. It's also a class that has new students added daily, because of scheduling issues. Individually, I really enjoy all of them as learners and as young people. But, together they are a hot mess. And, they don't. Stop. Talking. Ever.

After lots of prayer and digging deep into my repertoire of experience and resources, I have some tricks up my sleeve. Given, they don't always work, but I had great day with them this week and I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I hope some of these strategies are working.

Here goes:

1. Establish high expectations!
The first week of school I create a presentation that outlines everything. procedures, homework, behavior and consequences. I revisit these frequently. They are posted in my room. I ask students to help their classmates when someone forgets or doesn't know. If kids know what you want them do and how you want them to act, they can do these things.

2. Create consequences and stick with them!
When kids can't figure it out or choose not to meet the expectations they know what will happen to them. I have mine posted for the kids to see.

3. Build relationships!
I debated with putting this one first. It's so important! If kids know that you care about them and you show it,  they are much more willing to learn and produce work for you. No kid starts their day saying "I am going to make my teachers life a living hell today!" At least I hope they don't!
Who knows? Your class might be the only place where they feel safe and like someone wants them there. A handshake, a pat on the shoulder, praise for good work, caring for who they are outside of school, these are powerful! I had so many conversations this week about being a leader, setting a good example, having confidence, challenging yourself ... I was feeling drained, but I know that they need it.

4. Be real and be honest!
Sometimes you have to have real conversations with kids about where they are at. Be gentle, but honest. If they are not making the cut academically or behavior wise, let them know!

5. Focus on the positive
We start off every class with "Good things" I set the the timer for 2 minutes and the kids get a chance to share good things that are happening in their lives inside and outside of school. It's a great way to for me to get to know them as real people, not just as students. Students love it and definitely remind me if I forget to do good things

6. Keep them busy!
Kids who have work to attend to, ideas and questions to think about, discussions to be had, don't have a lot of time to misbehave. I always post an agenda of the class period on the board. I also post a
"success criteria". It's basically a "what am I going to learn and how I am going to show that I learned it" statement about what they need to accomplish during the class.

7. Use your strategies
If all else fails. I have a few things that have worked in the past. If a student is repeatedly off task, talking or disruptive, and I have asked them to stop, I write their name on the board. This is a warning. If they continue, I put a check, and keep adding as necessary. If a student reaches 3 checks, it is a phone call home and a lunch or after school detention. This has worked pretty well in the past and kids usually don't get past the first check before getting their behavior back on track.

Also, during independent work time, if a students is struggling to stay on task, I will pass out a treat to the students who are working and on task (a skittle or m&m etc) This is a good motivator for kids who are doing the right thing to continue, and the kids who aren't, get a motivator to do so.

Home Made Pretzels

Who loves carbs? I do, I do! I always want to make my own bread and dough and such, but you see, I have this irrational fear. I am terrified of yeast. I mean, it's alive and you eat it! YIKES! Plus I always mess it up. This recipe was calling my name, pretzels, yum! Even though it called for yeast, I decided to just try it anyway. It's a little involved, but so worth it! Mine didn't come out very pretty, but they tasted delicious and that's what really counts.
Here is the original recipe

You need:
1 1/2 cup warm water
1 packet of yeast
2 tablespoons sugar
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons sea salt
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup baking soda
2 quarts water
1 egg, lightly beaten with 1 tablespoon of water
course sea salt

First make the yeast according to the package.
Let it get all foamy...
It's alive!
Then add in the flour, salt, baking soda and butter. Then knead it and form it into a ball. Then put the dough ball into a bowl and let it rise some where warm for about an hour covered with a towel. This is the part that I was afraid of, so I went to the store and prayed that it worked. When I got home it was a fluffy, puffy, dough ball, success!

Next cut the dough ball into pieces on a floured surface. Then line 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper or foil that has been sprayed lightly with cooking spray.
Not very pretty...but it will do!
Then cover with a towel again and let them rise for another 30 minutes. There was a lot of waiting during this recipe. I am glad I had things to do!

After they are all puffed up again, preheat the oven to 425 and put the rack in the middle of the oven. Next boil up some water in a sauce pan. Then here is where it got a little hairy. The recipe calls for adding in 1/4 cup of baking soda when the water reached a rolling boil. Well, I dumped in the whole cup all at once and it was an explosion on my stove of foamy baking soda-y water!

I would suggest adding it very gradually and stirring while you add.
Then turn down to a low boil. Next, here's the weird part, you add the dough right into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then flip and let it boil for another 30 seconds.
My baking soda mess!

Place the dough rolls onto a paper towel to dry off a little and then transfer them back to the greased baking sheet.

After all of the rolls have been boiled, brush the top with a beaten egg/water mixture and top with salt.

Make slits in the dough (I guess to let the yeast breathe??)

Then bake them at 425 for 20 minutes. They make all kinds of popping and bubbling sounds in the oven, but when they come out it's magical!
They were amazing! The dough was a little dense, but I shared them with my family and I am pretty sure they were a hit! Next time we are going to experiment and try actual pretzel shapes, we shall see how that goes! Happy baking, yeast lovers!

What I wore Wednesday!

This week has been a transition into fall! Our big tree out front is just starting to get a little less green, there is a chill in the air in the morning, I am excited for fall, but not quite ready for winter!

Dressing in the morning has been a challenge as it is like 40 degrees, but by the time I am leaving at the end of the day it is close to 80! Oy! How do you dress for that?

I finally wore the coral blazer! I had to attend the fall kick off party for the program that my student teacher is a part of and the invitation said the dress code was "Business Cocktail"???!!! What?! I asked around and received some humorous suggestions, such as an prom dress and a blazer. So I settled on this little number and got a surprising amount of compliments! Our function was at the Brown Palace, the same fancy hotel we went to with book club... We had a nice cocktail hour and I got to catch up with some of my colleagues, it was a lovely evening!

This day in history...

This weekend has been another quick one! After a rough Friday, I was ready to spend the weekend with my sweet family!

Friday I had to go into the science teacher next door to me and cry for a second after my horrible 4th period class. Then I just could not get back on track all day! I know God put these kids in my class for a reason, I just don't quite know what the reason is yet!
This week was crazy, again. Callie bridged to brownies in girl scouts. I am thankful for such a sweet group of little girls, that get to be together. They are so excited for this year!
Wednesday, Brien and I stayed up until 12:30 installing our new hot water heater, well Brien installed it I was there for moral support and fetching things. It started leaking during the summer but was kind of off and on. So, we took preventative measures and got a new one before the basement flooded. It's kind of nice to be ahead of the ball on this project. Usually we are trying to do damage control!

Friday was my Mom's Birthday! We brought pizza and presents over to her house after work/school and hung  out for the evening

Brien has been on call this weekend and it had been quiet until Saturday, Oy! He worked all morning while Callie, Kellen and I ran errands and such. Then we headed out to the country for sweet Brookie's 4th birthday! The theme of her party was Sheriff Callie, which apparently is some sort of show. The kids had a blast panning for gold and playing all afternoon!

All boy, all the time!
After the party we jetted back to town to have a birthday/anniversary supper with my Family at the Olive Garden. It was fun but a little chaotic with the mister up and down taking calls! I hate on call weekends!

Sunday we did church, groceries and my parents came over for Brien's famous tacos and my annual collapsed angel food cake. Every year my mom requests an angel food cake for her birthday and every year I mess it up. One year I filled the pan too full and did not put the oven rack on the bottom and it was a foamy sugar mess everywhere. It was that awful burned on sugar smell that stunk up the house for a week. Another year I was cleaning the kitchen while the cake was baking in the oven, and I was wiping down the knobs on the oven and accidentally turned the oven to broil for a few minutes. That was a crispy mess. Last year was my first success, The cake was perfecto! Then I added on the super heavy gooey frosting and the cake collapsed under the weight of it. At least it was edible. This year I wisened up and googled angel food cake frosting, Most of the recipes called for whip cream of some kind. But we are not really a whip cream frosting kind of family. So I found a recipe for whipped butter cream and modified it a little. It was slightly less heavy, but we still had some smashed cake. It's the taste that matters!

So this day a year ago was pretty special! My baby brother finally settled down and tied the knot!

It was such a sweet day! Callie was the flower girl (of course), Brien was a groomsmen and I was a 9 months pregnant, honorary bridesmaid! It was HOT that day, but it was filled with dancing, fabulous food and family!

They are so much fun and Callie and Kellen love them so much! Now they just need to get in on this kid action and get our babies some cousins!

Also this weekend in history, on a fall night, just like this one...We were sitting at home watching the broncos play, after having supper with the family, when we thought that Kellen was going to make an early appearance. I have never been so ready  to have something over with in my life! I was feeling funky, so we went to the hospital to get things checked out. Apparently you are supposed to drink lots of water when you are knocked up, nope not me! I am trapped in a classroom like 8 hours a day, there's no time for that! So I was dehydrated, they sent me home with out a baby and we had to wait another 2 weeks.

We are already starting to gear for the baby man's 1st birthday and I can't believe a year has gone by! It is terrible that I am a little teary eyed just thinking about it?? yikes!

Well, off to enjoy another wild week...

Outfits from the week...

I keep forgetting that this week is a mess because of Labor day, so I am off a day on everything!
This week has been much better. My colleagues and I met this week and we decided to slloooowww down! We are rushing through important teaching just to get the work in. The we are constantly back tracking to have kids fill in the gaps. I was glad to hear that everyone was feeling the strain, I am not alone!

The teacher across the hall rained on my parade today by saying that today was the last hot day of the year... I was sad. I need hot weather. I still have so many cute summer-y outfits to cram in!

It was a good month y'all! I found mostly lady clothes, for myself this month. Labor day weekend

It was a wild one let me tell you! We just can't seem to rest on the weekends...
Saturday we had our nephew's 4th birthday party. It was at the bowling alley, my sister in law did our other nephew's 4th birthday party here a few years ago and it was a blast! I mean super cool shoes, pizza, and ninja turtles, what more could we ask for?!
Happy Birthday sweet Drewby! I can't believe he is four. Andrew was born just a few weeks before Brien and I got married, he was just a teeny peanut at our wedding and now is so big!
A special guest appearance by Leonardo, he was a big hit!
The cousins doing their sweet ninja moves.

Kellen and Leo, no fear here!

Callie said we need a mommy and Callie and picture! I hope she always wants to take these...

After our busy Saturday, we had a busy Sunday! After church we went up to Brien's parents house for brunch, his aunt and uncle were in town visiting from California. We ate ourselves silly, per usual, and spend the rest of the day looking at old pictures and relaxing. Well as relaxing as you can get with a 7 year old and a baby who refused to sleep.

Monday, we went to Callie's first Rockies game! Brien's brothers and our sister in law's siblings were all there with us. Apparently they have amazing hook up with great seats! We were in the shade the whole time, the weather was perfect (77 and little breeze) we had a whole bathroom and concession stand pretty much to our section.
Coors Field! It was super bright out!

Squirmy worms eating snacks!

So excited about baseball!

Not a bad picture, minus the stranger behind us! I always wonder how many photos we have bombed whenever there is a stranger in one of our pictures?? Just a random thought.

Callie wanted to take a "Rockies outfit picture" before we left.

Tee:Target
Shorts: Kohls
Flip flops: Payless
Callie had a blast bouncing from seat to seat and eating pretty much anything she asked for pizza, nachos, peanuts, cotton candy, dippin dots. I don't know how she is not sick right now! We stayed for about 7 innings and then sitting still was no longer an option and that was our cue to go! It was a perfect way to end our last weekend of summer!
